How the fuck can I feel Leaf’s energy rushing through this house like a hurricane through shattered windows? Like a hurricane, it’s fucking up everything for me, and it’s not something I can ignore.

I head to her room, not willing to wait for answers. She whirls around at the sound of my footsteps, but I’m already closing in on her. The look on her face makes me want to grab her. Maybe I want to scare her, maybe I just want to know what the hell is going on.

My eyes stray towards the bundle of items she’s let spill onto the desk behind her. Tiny metal bowls. A bundle of herbs, the husk of a pilfered flower. My hand reaches out and lands behind her, fingers circling around a long white candle. It’s still slightly warm, strands of melted wax just soft enough to yield to the pressure of my fingers.

“Well,” I mutter. “Is she cured?”

Leaf narrows her eyes at me, but there’s something fake about her glare.

Not fake. Distracted.

My hand shifts around the candle, turning it over to the side that’s unburned. It’s thicker on this end, and I suddenly can’t get the thought of using it on her out of my head. Not in a dripping candle wax sort of way.

In a way that makes me want to slide it into her wet, tight little pussy, just the way I did my fingers Sunday morning.

I toss the candle back down onto the desk where it lands with a thud. Never mind. I’d rather use my dick. “What’d you pray for?”

“I didn’t pray for anything.”

“Then why’d you do it?”

“Because she asked me to. Why does it matter?”

“Because you’re letting yourself be manipulated.”

A laugh escapes her lips. “By praying with your mom? Paranoid much?”

“You haven’t lived with them for eighteen years,” I mutter. “They’re only trying to use you, and shit like that, how compliant you are, just opens the door further. Your goal should be to get the fuck out of here as soon as you can, not get them to try to like you.”

“I don’t care if they like me,” she counters, eyes cold. “I don’t care if anyone likes me. This entire town can go to hell.”

Including you.

I can hear it, silent in her words.

I look her up and down. “What’s with you, Hex? You’re acting weird.”

Her expression steels over. I know she’s trying, but I can see straight through it. “Maybe it’s you.”

I lift an eyebrow. “Is it me?”

“Look,” she says, turning away from me. “Just leave me alone.”

“And if I don’t?”

“I guess nothing,” she sighs, her hands still scuttering over her instruments, seeking out tools. “You’ll never suffer any consequences. Just like always.”

I frown. “What the hell is that supposed to mean?”

“Nothing, it’s not—it’s not you,” she stammers. “Or on second thought, maybe it is. You, your parents, this fucking house.” She turns back around and pins me with her stare. “Is it really such a revelation that you’ll always be in a better position
